Randi

Randi
Randi Hydro Power Station is one of Vattenfall’s small facilities along the Lule Älv River. It is situated in Jokkmokk Municipality by the road to Kvikkjokk, approximately 20 kilometres from Jokkmokk. Construction was initiated in 1973 and the power station was commissioned in 1976.

Construction characteristics

The Randi facility is a combination of a construction above and below ground. The building extends below ground level, but the roof is in line with the surface of the ground – an unusual construction. Another distinctive feature of the facility is that the control room was insulated in terms of both sound and vibration. This was achieved by placing it on rubber ‘pillows’.

When the construction of Randi was finished, it marked the end of nearly 80 years of hydro power development along the Lule Älv River, averaging one new hydro power station every five years.

Characteristics of the Lule Älv River

Hydro power is a reliable, safe and renewable source of energy. Today, hydro power accounts for nearly half of Sweden’s total electricity demand. The Lule Älv River, by which Randi is located, is Vattenfall’s and Sweden’s most important river for hydro power generation.
