GEAB Heat – district heating to the inhabitants of Gotland
GEAB (Gotlands Energi AB) is situated on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. The company is owned by Vattenfall (75%) and the Municipality of Gotland (25%).
Work to bring electricity to rural Swedish areas began after World War One. However, as a result of the depression of the 1930s and World War Two, electricity was not fully installed on Gotland until the early 1950s. Consequently, electricity customers on Gotland had to pay much higher electricity prices than customers on the mainland.
GEAB was established in its current form in 1978, when it was decided that Vattenfall would take over the previous company AB Skandinaviska Elverk. In addition, Gotland Municipality and Vattenfall were to co-ordinate electricity distribution through a co-owned company. By doing so, the island of Gotland was guaranteed the same electricity price as mainland Sweden. One of the company’s first steps was to decide on the construction of a district heating network in the city of Visby. Later on, a decision was made to erect two combined heat and power (CHP) diesel plants to generate electricity and use the heat of the flue gas to produce district heating.
GEAB’s operations are divided into five business areas, one of which is district heating.
District heating is a system that supplies heat by distributing hot water from the district heating plant, through a closed system, to houses and commercial properties. The hot water has a temperature of between 75 and 110 degrees Celsius depending on the season. The heat is transferred to the central district heating unit in the building and the water temperature is lowered before the water leaves the central unit and returns to the district heating plant to be reheated.
GEAB’s district heating network is 76 km long and supplies heat to customers in Visby, Klintehamn, Hemse and Slite.
The GEAB thermal power plants have an installed thermal capacity of approximately 151 MW.
GEAB thermal power plants are Reko-certified
The Swedish trade organisation Svensk Fjärrvärme has developed a quality assurance system called Reko for suppliers of district heating. Vattenfall’s district heating has met the requirements of this quality system since 2006. The purpose of the Reko certification is to strengthen the position of customers and to improve the relationship between customers and suppliers. The focus is on openness, comparability and trust.
