The hydropower plant Alphen aan de Maas has been in operation since 1990.
A hydropower plant uses the flow rate of the water. In order for the water to flow quickly and powerfully, a difference in height is needed. If this is not the case, a dam can be used to achieve height. Due to the lack of height difference in the Netherlands, the role of hydropower in energy production is limited.
