Umluspen Hydro power station

Umluspen Hydro power station
Umluspen Hydro Power Station is the first of Vattenfall’s three facilities in the upper stretches of the Ume Älv River, between Lake Storuman and the Juktån River (the second-largest tributary to the Ume Älv River).

History

The construction of the power station was initiated in 1953 and the twin units were commissioned in 1957. Umluspen is situated by Lake Storuman, which also serves as a reservoir for the power station with a total regulating capacity of 1,110 million m3 and a height of 7 metres. The gross head (drop) is 34 metres.

Umluspen incorporates two Kaplan turbines.

New oil reduces risk of fire

The transformers within a power station contain significant volumes of oil, which may be dangerous if a fire breaks out. In 2002, after a period of testing, Umluspen Power Station was equipped with a new type of oil to reduce risks. The high-voltage transformer at the station was replaced at the same time. This type of biodegradable oil had not previously been used in high-voltage transformers of this kind (150 kV).The new oil is biodegradable and leaves no toxic residues, thus reducing environmental impact. Furthermore, it is less flammable and does not cause fire to spread. If the oil ignites, it will extinguish extremely quickly.
