The Horns Rev 1 wind farm, located 20 kilometres off the west coast of Jutland, was inaugurated in 2002. It covers an area of 20 square kilometres.
The water depth at Horns Rev is six to 14 metres. To maximise the capacity of each wind turbine, they were erected 560 metres apart. The turbines are connected to each other via a 33-kilovolt cable system. The electricity generated is fed to a transformer platform on the edge of the wind farm. There, the voltage is increased to 150 kV before the electricity is transmitted to Hvidbjerg Strand via a 21-kilometre-long submarine cable.
Manufactured in Norway, the submarine cable was the world's first plastic-insulated 150 kV cable. With a diameter of 19.2 centimetres, it was also the thickest submarine cable produced at that time.
