Ajaure

Ajaure
Construction of Ajaure hydro power plant started in the summer of 1962 and the plant was commissioned in 1967. It was the first in Sweden to use a diagonal turbine.

The power plant is situated in the upper part of the river Umeälven, about four kilometres downstream of Lake Ajaure.

The dam at Ajaure is one of Vattenfall's largest, and Vattenfall has implemented several measures to further improve the safety of the dam and to prepare it for what is known as a 10,000 year flood, i.e. an extreme flow of water which is likely to occur only once every 10,000 years.

A modernisation project was carried out at Ajaure power plant in 2024–2025. The work included replacing the turbine and the generator, the intake and the tunnels. In addition, the electrical and control systems were renewed and adapted to the modernisation of the plant’s power grid by Vattenfall Eldistribution and Svenska kraftnät.

The Ajaure dam has a large catchment area and heavy rainfall places high demands on the plant's availability. The modernisation of the plant is expected to extend its technical lifespan by at least 40 years.
