An agreement between Statens Vattenfallsverk (Vattenfall) and Skellefteå Stads Kraftverk was made in 1968 to utilise the head (drop) in the Skellefteå River, upstream of Grytfors Power Station. Construction work was initiated in 1969 and finished in 1972.
Bastusel
Bastusel Power Station is situated approximately 150 kilometres inland of the Skellefteå River outlet in Bottenviken (the Bay of Bothnia). The head of the station is 77 metres.
Increased safety
As part of Vattenfall’s programme for hydro power, the Bastusel facility was upgraded to meet increased safety demands. An extensive investment programme has been implemented at the dam to make it able to withstand the extreme water levels that are expected to occur once every 10,000 years. As part of this programme, the height of the dam has been increased and the spillways
