The Askersund heating plant was commissioned in 1993. As part of Motala's business area, it can be monitored and remotely controlled from the control room at the combined heat and power plant in Motala.
Askersund primarily uses biofuel in the form of wood chips and residual products from the forestry industry, sourced from local suppliers. In order to make maximum use of the biofuel, the plant is equipped with a flue gas condenser that converts heat from the flue gases into district heating. Thanks to flue gas condensation, energy that would otherwise have been lost is recovered.
In 2024, a new overhead crane was installed at the plant to ensure continued reliable district heating production.
The fossil oils previously included in the energy mix were replaced with bio-oils in 2025. As a result, Vattenfall Värme’s district heating in Askersund is now produced entirely using fossil-free biofuels.
