Gotlands Energi AB is the power company for the island of Gotland. 75% of it is owned by Vattenfall and 25% by Region Gotland. Gotlands Energi supplies district heating in four locations on Gotland: Visby, Slite, Klintehamn and Hemse.
Visby
Gotlands Energi started building its district heating network in Visby in 1982. District heating is mainly produced from locally sourced forest fuels and bio-oil. A combination of seawater and waste water from the sewage treatment works is also used as a heat source.
Visby also has a district cooling network, where cooling from the sea is used to provide a number of properties in Visborgsstaden with cooling all year round.
Slite
The heat business in Slite started in 1983 with the utilisation of waste heat from Cementa's cement production process. Excess heat from nearby industries is still the main source in Slite's district heating generation.
Hemse and Klintehamn
The district heating in Hemse and Klintehamn is generated from locally produced forest bio-energy.
