Vattenfall operates both a heating plant and a district heating network in Knivsta, south of Uppsala.
The heating plant in Knivsta has been in operation since 1976. Its primary fuel is wood chips, bark, and other residual products from the forestry industry. A significant proportion of this comes from local suppliers.
In 2025, the remaining fossil oils in our energy mix will be replaced by bio-oils. This means that our district heating in Knivsta will be produced using fuels that are 100 per cent fossil-free.
In May 2023, a new boiler was commissioned to further strengthen the district heating supply. The fuel used is pellets or wood chips. The boiler is used as a base load during the summer and as a peak load on the coldest winter days.
