Velsen 24 and Velsen 25 are conventional steam units that were commissioned in 1974 and 1986, respectively.
The Velsen 24 and Velsen 25 power plants, along with the nearby IJmond plant, differ from other power plants in the Netherlands in that they convert residual blast furnace gas (BFG) from the nearby Tata Steel factory into electricity and steam. The blast furnace gas, that is of no further use to Tata Steel, is transported through pipelines from the factory in IJmuiden to the Velsen plant.
Unlike the IJmond plant, Velsen 24 and Velsen 25 can operate on natural gas. Velsen 24 serves as a backup unit, and is primarily used when the Velsen 25 and Ijmond units are not in operation.
