Vattenfall obtained permission to build Lasele Hydro Power Station in 1952. The facility was excavated into the bedrock and two turbines were installed. The head (drop) of 54 metres was considered to be very high, which led to discussions as to whether Francis or Kaplan turbines should be used. Finally, Kaplan turbines were selected and were supplied by NOHAB; they were the first turbines to be produced for such a steep head.
The station was commissioned in 1956.
