Stadsforsen hydro power plant was first commissioned in 1939 with two units. A third unit was installed in 1952, increasing the capacity of the facility.
In 2005, the third unit at Stadsforsen was refurbished, extending its lifespan and increasing its capacity. The first and second units had both been refurbished prior to this.
As part of Vattenfall's programme for increased safety at its hydro power plants, investments were made in 2006 to improve the regulation of the dam and to reduce the need for maintenance.
